Iowa Mutual Aid Compact (IMAC)
On April 22, 2002, the Iowa Mutual Aid Compact (IMAC) was signed into law. IMAC is a voluntary intrastate program under code section 29C.22. Political subdivisions must be signatories of the compact to implement assistance through IMAC in a disaster that has been declared either by the local member political subdivision or the Governor. When a member political subdivision has exhausted all of its resources and needs further assistance, it can reach out to its neighboring members for support. The legislation will not replace or negate current agreements members may have with other political subdivisions.
IMAC is closely related to the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) which is utilized on an interstate basis for sharing resources in Governor declared disasters. For more information, contact the Readiness & Response Bureau.
