Assistance for Individuals

Currently, low-income families in the following six counties are now eligible for State Individual Assistance due to a Governor's Disaster Proclamation: Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Pottawattamie and Woodbury.

 

 

Business Assistance

Small, non-farm businesses in 14 Iowa counties are now eligible to apply for low interest disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Eligible primary counties are Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Pottawattamie and Woodbury; eligible neighboring counties are Cass, Cherokee, Crawford, Ida, Montgomery, Page, Plymouth and Shelby. Donations

At this time, unsolicited donations of "stuff" is not needed. Cash is best. It doesn't need to be sorted, stored or distributed, and cash allows the receiving voluntary agency to direct the donation to where it is most urgently needed. Click here for a list of possible donation recipients.

At this time, evacuations have been called for by local officials in the following communities:

  • About 143 homes in Council Bluffs
  • South side of town of Hamburg
    (more than 300 residents)
  • Fremont County, all areas of the county west of I-29.
  • Mills County issued mandatory evacuation order for citizens south of Gaston Ave. to the Fremont County border and west of I-29.
  • Monona County, 17 homes (39 people).

Residents of Modale have not been asked to evacuate, but there is a volunary evacuation in place (200-300 residents).

On June 28, Gov. Terry E. Branstad sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, requesting a Secretarial Disaster Designation for six Iowa counties due to damage caused by recent flooding along the Missouri River and its tributaries: Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Pottawattamie and Woodbury. Secretary Vilsack signed an agricultural disaster declaration on July 8. This designation also includes the contiguous counties of Cass, Cherokee, Crawford, Ida, Montgomery, Page, Plymouth and Shelby.

Iowa Mortgage Help - Flood-affected Iowans who fear they may not be able to make their mortgage payment are encouraged to contact Iowa Mortgage Help. This state-sponsored resource offers free, confidential mortgage counseling for Iowans. Pets

  • Most shelters do not accept pets. Learn how to prepare your pets for your possible evacuation.
  • Hooves and Paws Rescue in Glenwood (Mills County) is helping owners of horses, dogs and cats place their animals in temporary foster care due to flooding. Calls to the shelter at 712-527-3721 will be returned within 24 hours or sooner. Or, email them.

 

Presidential Disaster Declaration

On June 27, 2011, Iowa HSEMD received word that six counties had received a Presidential Disaster Declaration due to flooding along the Missouri River and its tributaries. Public Assistance

Under the federal Public Assistance program, FEMA awards grants to assist state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations. Six counties are now eligible for Public Assistance due to a Presidential Disaster Declaration 1998: Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona, Pottawattamie and Woodbury.

Flooding of a private sewage system can be a hazardous situation for homeowners. It
may lead to a back-up of sewage in the home, contaminated drinking water, and lack of sanitation.
